‘Savages’ To Open The Zurich Film Festival

With Savages steadily performing well for a violent rated R (heading for a $50m+ run) at the American box office, Universal is gearing up to start the film’s international promo & release. First up – the Zurich Film Festival. Hopefully Blake and the cast are able to attend the premiere! Source

Oliver Stone’s stoner action thriller Savages, starring Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Blake Lively, will open the 8th annual Zurich International Film Festival on September 20.

Stone is no stranger to the young Swiss festival, having attended several times before, including in 2007, when the Oscar-winning filmmaker received Zurich’s lifetime achievement honor, the Golden Eye. This year’s Zurich Golden Eye winner is veteran producer Jerry Weintraub, whose credits include the Ocean’s Eleven and Karate Kid franchises.

Savages, which also features John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek, has earned $46 million domestically for Universal Pictures since its July 6th release. But international distributors have held back the global rollout of the film, in part to avoid going head-to-head with this summer’s big televised sporting events – the Euro 2012 Soccer Championships and the 2012 London Olympics.

Savages begins its European rollout September 13 in Russia and continues across Europe through September and October.

The 8th annual Zurich Film Festival runs Sept.20-30.

Blake Lively to Star in Steven Soderbergh’s THE SIDE EFFECTS

WWW.COLLIDER.COM: In Novemeber, we reported that Steven Soderbergh had left the adaptation of the 1960s spy TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and turned his attention to The Bitter Pill with Scott Z. Burns (The Informant) writing the screenplay.  The Playlist now reports that the film—now titled The Side Effects—has locked down financing and cast Blake Lively, Jude Law, and Channing Tatum in the lead roles.  Lively will play, “Emily Hawkins, a woman who turns to prescription meds to cope with the anxiety of the upcoming release from prison of her husband.”  Tatum will play the husband and Jude Law will play Hawkins’ new psychiatrist.  This will be Lively’s first film with Soderbergh, but it will be Tatum’s third collaboration with the director (Haywire and Magic Mike) and Law’s second (Contagion).

According to The Playlist, “There’s several meaty supporting roles still to be cast,” and Soderbergh plans to shoot the movie in April for a 2013 release.  The Side Effects will be Soderbergh’s penultimate movie before his retirement/sabbatical.  His last movie will be the Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, will shoot this summer and be released on HBO  His latest film, Haywire, opens January 20th, and his next movie, Magic Mike, opens June 27th.

As for the casting on The Side Effects, Lively did a solid supporting turn in The Town and she has the potential to give a great lead performance if she gets the right role, so hopefully this will be the one.  Law is fine casting and he did good work in Contagion.  It’s Tatum with whom I continue to have a problem.  I still haven’t found a movie where his screen presence isn’t overshadowed by furniture. I’m hoping that streak will end since the guy isn’t going away anytime soon.

Movie News: Pride & Prejudice & Zombies

BREAKING: Blake Lively Offered The Lead In Pride Prejudice & Zombie!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a director in posession of a good screenplay must be in want of a star. Thus it is that Twitch are reporting that Craig Gillespie has offered the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively.

If she signs on it’ll be a choice starring role for the actress, who we last saw as Carol Ferris in Green Lantern (she may get to be Star Sapphire yet…) But it’s also one that’s been linked to and abandoned by a number of her peers already. First in the ring was Natalie Portman (who remains a producer), followed by Emma Stone and rumours of Scarlett Johansson and Mia Wasikowska. Did they know something Lively doesn’t yet?

The presence of Lars and the Real Girl and Fright NIght’s Gillespie at the helm (replacing David O Russell) is reassuring, but it’ll be intriguing to see what sort of film he can spin from the one-joke source novel, written by Seth Graeme-Smith (who also penned the screenplay).

If it’s passed you by so far, the book was at the vanguard of pastiche literary zom-com mash-ups that briefly crazed in bookshops a couple of years ago. P&P&Z sees Elizabeth Bennet searching for love and independence as a zombie plague erupts around her and American wildlife inexplicably starts appearing in the Berkshire countryside. It was followed by the likes of Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, and of course, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which is also heading to a cinema near you, courtesy of Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.

Shooting on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is pencilled in for the beginning of 2012.
