”It’s just a wholesome story about drugs, sex, and violence,” says Blake Lively of Savages. To be more specific, director/co-writer Oliver Stone’s action thriller follows two best pals and marijuana growers, Chon (John Carter‘s Taylor Kitsch) and Ben (Kick-Ass‘ Aaron Johnson), who run afoul of a Mexican cartel leader named Elena (Salma Hayek) seeking to control the guys’ crop of superstrong weed. Ben and Chon wind up declaring war on the cartel after Elena and her henchman (Benicio Del Toro) kidnap Ophelia (Lively), a Laguna Beach hippie who’s in a relationship with both Ben and Chon.

Add Blake Lively’s name to the long list of actresses who have been offered and rejected the lead part in the proposed big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride And Prejudice And Zombies.
After two years of development – the feature adaptation having been announced in 2009 – Pride And Prejudice And Zombies is increasingly appearing to be one of those snakebitten properties that just can’t get off the ground. Despite a heavy push by Lionsgate and month after month of effort the film has only a single attached cast member (Dominic Cooper as Mr Darcy) while the project has cycled between multiple directors and seemingly every young female star going has been offered and rejected the lead part at some time.
Lively was offered the part in late September but according to Variety’s Justin Kroll she has now rejected the offer, joining a list of actresses refusing the part that includes Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, and Scarlett Johansson. Mia Wasikowska and Olivia Wilde have both reportedly been in the mix at different times as well.
This raises what should have been an obvious question months ago: Why don’t women want to play this part? I can’t imagine it’s a money issue and there have been simply far too many rejections at this point for it to come down to schedule or similar issues. Is it time for Lionsgate to take a hard look at the script? Or perhaps to simply walk away? And are there any actresses left who would suit the part and could draw an audience that haven’t already rejected it?
BREAKING: Blake Lively Offered The Lead In Pride Prejudice & Zombie!
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a director in posession of a good screenplay must be in want of a star. Thus it is that Twitch are reporting that Craig Gillespie has offered the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively.
If she signs on it’ll be a choice starring role for the actress, who we last saw as Carol Ferris in Green Lantern (she may get to be Star Sapphire yet…) But it’s also one that’s been linked to and abandoned by a number of her peers already. First in the ring was Natalie Portman (who remains a producer), followed by Emma Stone and rumours of Scarlett Johansson and Mia Wasikowska. Did they know something Lively doesn’t yet?
The presence of Lars and the Real Girl and Fright NIght’s Gillespie at the helm (replacing David O Russell) is reassuring, but it’ll be intriguing to see what sort of film he can spin from the one-joke source novel, written by Seth Graeme-Smith (who also penned the screenplay).
If it’s passed you by so far, the book was at the vanguard of pastiche literary zom-com mash-ups that briefly crazed in bookshops a couple of years ago. P&P&Z sees Elizabeth Bennet searching for love and independence as a zombie plague erupts around her and American wildlife inexplicably starts appearing in the Berkshire countryside. It was followed by the likes of Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, and of course, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which is also heading to a cinema near you, courtesy of Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.
Shooting on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is pencilled in for the beginning of 2012.
